Leave the Stump: A Sermon

There’s a parcel of land I drive pass on my way to work and back home. For the last few months I’ve watched as it is being cleared.
Trees are cut down. A single bulldozer moves from tree stump to tree stump. It digs around each stump preparing each one for the day they will be pulled from the ground.
I’ve had my own experience digging up stumps. Not tree stumps but bushes and not with a bulldozer but with a shovel, a mattock, and an aching back.
Ground was broken up. The roots were exposed. The mattock was flung on the roots cutting them in two. Finally, the pulling, rocking back and forth working it loose until up it comes. That’s how it is with sin. Not until the ground (your heart) is broken [by the Convicting Power of the Holy Spirit] and the root of the sin exposed [by the Loving Power of God] will the stump (your soul) be saved [by the Saving Power of Jesus Christ.]

Daniel 4:1-37

Background Daniel 4:4

King Nebuchadnezzar was resting. He had

 conquered the known world

 put down all his enemies

 demolished the Holy City Jerusalem

 destroyed the Holy Temple

Confiscated the golden vessels

Taken prisoner the princes of Israel
King Nebuchadnezzar had built a wall around himself

He lived in a magnificent palace

A giant wall surrounded the city

A giant moat encircled the wall with guards patrolling day & night

He shut out all his enemies and relaxed in his lazy boy recliner, resting.

But in spite of all this he could not shut God out!
I want to point out four absolutes if you are to rightly understand the will of God.

I. You must have the right man. 6-9 Daniel

King Nebuchadnezzar is said to have had a dream we would call it a nightmare.

He reached everywhere to everyone to get the meaning.

Verses 10-18

Somehow king Nebuchadnezzar knew the dream had something to do with him, not just his kingdom.

He was afraid! (5) Reference Hebrews 10:31

He’s not resting now!

II. You must have the right meaning. 19-27

Many interpretations but only one meaning

For a solid hour Daniel couldn’t speak. He knew the meaning.

The tree is king Nebuchadnezzar

The stump is the least of king Nebuchadnezzar that is left after the judgment of God

Repent! Repent! Break off thy sins!

III. You must have the right motive. 28-33

Why you do what you do?

King Nebuchadnezzar did it for himself. His own glory!

The judgment of God was a year in coming.

Maybe the king felt God had forgotten.

The warning of God’s prophet went unheeded. How long are you going to push aside the warnings of God?
How long are you going to put off the warning and the call of God on your life? Ignore the preacher, the Word, ignore God. But I promise you there will come a day of reckoning, a day of judgment, a day of accountability.
Here we see the king’s Madness!!

While the words of pride were being spewed out of the mouth of king Nebuchadnezzar…. ‘Is this not Babylon the great, which I myself have built as a royal residence by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?’
Then there was the voice from heaven that rang out against King Nebuchadnezzar. It was a seven-fold judgment.

Your kingdom is departed from thee.

They shall drive thee from men.

Your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field.

You shall be made to eat grass as oxen.

Seven times (years) shall pass over you.

Until you knower that the most High rules in the kingdom of men.

And the Most High gives it to who so ever He will.

IV. You must have the right mindset. 34-37

 His reason returned.

King Nebuchadnezzar served every hour of his seven year sentence.

He lifted up his eyes to heaven in prayer

He acknowledged the supremacy of Jehovah God!!!

His reasoning was restored.

Until Next Time,
