Within Arms Reach: Sermon notes/message

There are certain things you want nearby. You may not want them all the time but you at least keep them within arms length. Things like an umbrella, jacket, throw blanket, fly swat, wasp spray, car keys, credit cards and your cell phone (no; the cell phone is usually connected at the hip). But you get the idea.
That’s the way it is with the average person to include the church going crowd. There are things they want within arms reach for when they want them.

I have found the church is filled with people who long for a more intimate and uninterrupted relationship with God. They desire to sense His presence, and experience His power.

Most people in church live with a persistent, nagging fear that they are missing out on something in their walk as a believer. Their intellectual faith is in tact–but their intimacy with God is missing. Intimacy with God seems out-of-reach. Truth is, intimacy with God is within reach.

I read a church sign some years ago which said, ‘You have as much of God as you want.’ The implication is it is up to you. Behind the thought is actually what’s kept ‘at arms reach.’ It is the Holy Spirit which is kept at arms length. The fear is getting labeled as ’emotional’ or ‘falling into error.’

We can explain the Holy Spirit. It is acceptable. It is allowed.

We can’t encourage experiencing Him. It is neither acceptable or encouraged. Baptist withdraw from the idea of exhibiting the Holy Spirit in their lives. However, they desire intimacy with God. you can’t have it without the Holy Spirit.

Embracing the Holy Spirit seems out of the question.

Ephesians 3:14-21

  • 14. “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father,
  • 15. from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name,
  • 16. that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man,
  • 17. so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
  • 18. may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
  • 19. and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
  • 20. Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,
  • 21. to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:14-21 NASB

I. The Posture

14. “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father,

Bow my knees: the position of Humility

II. The Petition. 16-19

  • 16. that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man,
  • 17. so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
  • 18. may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
  • 19. and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

God would grant you…
According to the riches of His grace. You have untapped wealth!

What wealth?

  • Strength: Holy Spirit Power! Acts 1:8
  • Presence of the Holy Spirit in your life is evidence of your salvation.
  • Indwelling: ‘to settle down and feel at home.’ Does Jesus Christ feel at home in your life?
  • Grounded: On what foundation are you building? [Illustration] “If you don’t go deep, you can’t go high!”
  • Comprehension: You can comprehend without apprehending. In other words you can understand mentally without grasping, taking hold of, physically. you understand without making it your own.
  • Fullness: Christians use the wrong measurement to examine their lives. They want to use weak Christians when it is Jesus who is the fullness of God and the one we are to imitate.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Phil. 4:13

III. The Person

20. Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,

  • God is able to do all
  • God is above all
  • God is Abundantly above all
  • God is Exceeding abundantly above all

According to Holy Spirit Power
IV. The Purpose

21. to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.
To give God glory!

Summary

How many Sunday’s have you left the church house having entered determined to reach a more intimate relationship with God and left no different than when you walked in? Who is responsible for that?
The Spirit of God was sent, ultimately, to be engaged in our everyday lives…to be experienced intimately. God intends for our relationship to be close–growing in a deeper, nearness to Him. The Holy Spirit is interested in transforming us from the inside out.

All that you desire of God, He provides for You. It is within your grasp!

Until Next Time,
