Sermon Notes on Jesus’ Baptism

Timothy Keller, in his book, Jesus the King: Understanding the Life and Death of the Savior, speaks of entering the dance. He proposes that God’s invitation to have a relationship with Jesus is to be invited to His dance. One where He leads. It starts with a decision. The Gospel of Mark, chapter one and verse nine shows Jesus’ decision to be identified with Jehovah God. Jesus enters the dance!
“In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him; and a voice came out of the heavens: “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.” Immediately the Spirit impelled Him to go out into the wilderness. And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were ministering to Him.”

Mark 1:9-13 NASB

I. The Manner of Jesus’ Baptism. 9-10a

Baptized of John. (Se’ baptism)

It marked the beginning of Jesus’ ministry.

It identified Jesus Himself as the Messiah.

‘Coming up ‘

‘Out of the water’

II. The Miracle at Jesus’ Baptism. 10b-11

Was a Commissioning Service.
Was an Empowering Service.

Heavens opened (plural)

Spirit Descended

 Like a dove

Lit on Jesus. That is to say the dove (Holy Spirit) rested on Jesus.

God spoke. Audible? Isn’t that what we seek today? For God to speak?

My beloved Son. (Thought Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit? Jesus is God’s Son b/c the Holy Spirit is God.)

 ‘Well pleased’

III. The Master after Jesus’ Baptism. 12-13

Spirit
“driveth’ KJV (drive, force or urge, thrust and to cast forth) This was to be a test and a trial not to make Him fail but to make Him stronger!

 “wilderness’

  • Forty Days
  •  fasted day & night
  •  tempted of satan
  • ‘with wild animals.’ {Daniel wasn’t the only one thrown to wild animals!}
  •  ministered to by angels.
  •  In His humanity weak
  •   In His Spirit strong!
  •   A Biblical Truth: So Are We!

I am weak but thou art strong…Jesus keeps me from all wrong

God saw to it that Jesus had whatever provision was necessary.

Jesus relied upon God’s Word.

We are given victory by the working of the Holy Spirit when we give Jesus our faith! We win because Jesus won!

CHILDREN OF GOD, WE DON’T LOSE….WE WIN!!!!

You are made to enter into a divine dance with the trinity.

God must have created us not to get joy but to give joy. We are invited to enter the dance.

  • We are not made just to believe in God.
  • We are not made just to be spiritual in some general way.
  • We are not just to pray and get a bit of inspiration when things get tough.

That’s not what being a Christian is all about. It more about giving joy to others b/c you have joy in your relationship with Jesus.

Belief and Behavior are linked together.

You are invited to center everything in your life on God. To think of everything in terms of your relationship with God. Serve Him unconditionally. To pledge allegiance to one side is to declare opposition to the other side. That’s where you find your joy and enter the dance.

 Until next time
