Reasons to Take Comfort

Pastors will speak to their congregations about troubles. They’ll say ‘every one there is either headed into trouble, are in the midst if troubles or just coming out of trouble.’ This is true. Sitting here today are people who have troubles. I do not know the specifics but I do know you are troubled. If not, just give it a little time.

We all deal with them. Trouble seem to visit some more often than others. I want to identify with you on this subject today. I want you to know you are not alone. I want you to know some of what I have learned.

Anytime we take our focus off of God, His Word, and His desire for our lives we bring difficulties into our lives. I was once told ‘Difficulties are designed to make us better, not bitter.’ Anger is normal when we go through trials. Even bitterness towards God.

What we need is Divine comfort. We have to seek God. We have to allow God to minister to our needs and that in His way. Doesn’t mean it’s easy, but it is best for us. I want to share an Old Testament passage I found comforting.

Isaiah 43:1-7
But now, thus says the Lord, your Creator, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you.
“For I am the Lord your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I have given Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in your place. “Since you are precious in My sight,
Since you are honored and I love you, I will give other men in your place and other peoples in exchange for your life.
“Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, And gather you from the west.
“I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ And to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’ Bring My sons from afar And My daughters from the ends of the earth,
Everyone who is called by My name, And whom I have created for My glory, Whom I have formed, even whom I have made.” (Isaiah 43:1-7 NASB)

I. Don’t be afraid because I have redeemed you. {verse1}

To be redeemed means to be released from Bondage
To be redeemed means to be released from Sin of Selfishness
To be redeemed means to be released from Punishment

You are called by name. [This is a personal relationship]
You are not some foreign nobody. With God, all that happens with you is personal. He is interested in you and in what interest you.

You belong to your Creator, your redeemer, Your God.

II. Don’t be afraid because I am with you.

2}”When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you.
3}”For I am the Lord your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I have given Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in your place. “Since you are precious in My sight.
5}”Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, And gather you from the west.

I am there with you through the waters because you are precious.
When the troubles and trials of life flood over you like a raging river, don’t fret, God is with you.

I am there with you through the fire because you are precious.
When the troubles and trials of life flame up around you like an inferno, don’t be scared, God is with you.

‘I Am’ is The Holy One.

III. Don’t be afraid because I Love You. {verse 4}
Since you are honored and I love you, I will give other men in your place and other peoples in exchange for your life.
I am coming to get you. From the east to the west and the north to the south.
