The Passover Lamb

Exodus 12:1-14

Background to Text
1. N.T. Background
1). John 1:21ff = The Lamb of God
2). Matthew 26:26 = Blood of the New Covenant. “God asks no more of man than He is willing to pay.”
3). 1 Corinthians 11:27
4). 1 Peter 1:18-19 = a lamb without blemish. Precious blood of Christ!

2. O.T. Background
1). Exodus 1 & 2 People were in bondage
2). Moses was called of God 3:1-4:17
3). Moses goes back to Egypt 4:18-7:14
4). Ten plagues 7:15-11:10
W/in these we see the sovereignty of God. He deals w/ pantheism. =
1 : a doctrine that equates God with the forces and laws of the universe
2 : the worship of all gods of different creeds, cults, or peoples indifferently; also : toleration of worship of all gods (as at certain periods of the Roman empire)

3. Theological Background
1) The Abrahamic Covenant has been abused. People had only emphasized God’s side.
2) God came down — to deliver them
3) The Passover in the Old Testament tells that God deems death not too high a price to pay for redemption.

Exposition of Exodus 12:1-14
Deliverance came by the blood of the Passover lamb

God’s people needed to know the importance of the Passover. [1-2]
The beginning month was established and began with the first month as the Passover month.
[1] The Passover was of great theological significance — it pointed to Christ!

[2] The Passover will mark the beginning of their religious calendar.
God’s people needed to identify w/ the lamb. [3-4]
a lamb for each house
14 days with the lamb {you come to love the lamb}
It became a family representative

God’s people needed a lamb that met God’s standard, ‘conditions.’ [5]
[1] without blemish —- Romans 3:25
[2] a male of the first year — {points to Jesus}
[3] from the sheep or goats

God’s people needed to kill the lamb. [6]

God’s people needed to strike the lamb’s blood upon the doorposts. [7]

God’s people needed to eat the lamb. [8-12]
[1] eat the flesh that night roasted by fire
[2] with bitter herbs
[3] not boiled or raw
[4] burn with fire all that is left
[5] eat it in haste, clothed…{ready to march}
[6] It is the Lord’s Passover. {See things as God sees them}

God’s people need to be obedient [12-13]
[1] God will smite all the firstborn
[2] When God sees the blood, He will poss over you.

God’s people needed to keep the Passover as a memorial forever.
