The Marks of the Man of God

The Marks of a Man of God
I Tim. 6:11-14

But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.
For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.
Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, (1 Timothy 6:9-14 NASB)

‘Man of God’ is a title referencing a man holding the office of pastor.
‘Man of God’ a term referring to someone representing God by speaking His will.
The Apostle Paul lists four[4] marks of a man of God.

I. A Man of God is Marked by what He Flees from. v. 11
Flee = pheugo = P. A. Ind. = keep on fleeing

A. Love of Money. v.10
B. Love of Material possessions.
The man of God is in the business of piercing man’s heart w/ God’s truth. He does nothing for personal gain. The only reward I want to see is the obedience of God’s people to God to what I preach.

II. A Man of God is Marked by what He Follows after.
Righteousness = goodness – godliness – faith – love- perseverance [2 Tim 2:15] – gentleness.
Righteousness is to be declared justified. There is none righteous, no not one.
‘Be ye holy…’ [1 Peter 1:16]
‘Without faith it is impossible to please God’ [Heb. 11:6]
‘The Greatest of these …’ [1 Cor. 13:13]

III. A Man of God is Marked by what He Fights for. v.12
A. For the Faith
1. The avenue to salvation. [Eph. 2:8-9]
2. The access to pleasing God. [Heb. 11:6]

B. For the Family
1. The birthplace for learning about God
2. The barometer of our nation’s standing with God.

IV. A Man of God is Marked by what He is Faithful to. v. 13-14
A. The Giver of Life. Almighty God
1. The testimony of God. Jesus Christ
2. Faithful to God-Spouse-Children-Scripture

B. The Commandments
1. A reference to the complete, revealed Word of God.
2. Man of God – a guardian of the treasure of truth he is to proclaim.

Preach it, Live it. There is no greater privilege than to be a man of God & preach His Word. Sometimes the burdens are heavy and the despairs are great. The rewards, however, are priceless.
Along with that privilege comes a fearful responsibility.
Let me pose this question. Should not every saint of God be so marked as the man of God?

But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: (1 Timothy 6:9-14 KJV)

Until next time
