The Explaining of Justification

The Explaining of Justification {Romans 3:21-28}

21] But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22] even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; 23] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24] being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25] whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26] for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27] Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28] For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. (Romans 3:21-28 NASB)

Romans is a doctrinal treatise penned by the Apostle Paul under the guide of the Holy Spirit. He has dealt with the truth all men are sinners. Now he concentrates on salvation from the penalty of sin. Salvation is justification by faith.

Justification is an act, not a process. There are no degrees of justification. Every believer has the same right standing before God. Justification is what God does. It is not the work of man. No sinner can justify himself before God. Important yet is the truth justification does not make us righteous, justification is the act of God where He declares us righteous.

Sometimes justification is confused with sanctification. As God makes us more and more like His Son, Jesus, we become more and more sanctified. Sanctification is ever changing. From day to day our measure of sanctification changes.

“But Now” (21) – a conjunction of heavenly proportions.

I. But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, =
The Old Testament Law revealed righteousness came by man behaving.
The New Testament Gospel reveals righteousness coming by man believing.

II. Even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ
Faith is only as good as it’s object. All men trusts something.
“Law righteousness is a reward for works. Gospel righteousness is a gift through faith.” Boasting = Look what I did. God takes all that away. It is He who does the act of justification.
Belief in God does not save. Only a personal individual faith in Jesus Christ. Even the demons believe in God and tremble. (James 2:19)

III. For all those who believe
Law to the Jews, not to Gentiles.
Good News to all mankind.
All mankind guilty of sin. {3:23}

IV. By grace {3:24}
God in His mercy does not give us what we deserve, and God in grace gives us what we do not deserve. ‘Freely’ = ‘without a cause.’

V. Being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. {24b}
The price? Blood. Jesus’ blood. God’s Only Begotten Son.
Propitiation = carries the idea of appeasing God.

VI. In perfect justice {3:25a – 26}
