Not many souls will reach heaven without a battle with depression. It seems those who serve The Lord most faithfully are the most fiercely attacked. Moses, Job, Elijah, John the Baptist and Simon Peter to mention a few biblical characters. All of us know something about depression.
1. The Condition of Discouragement
Elijah was from the rural community. He was accustomed to the solitary life. He was also the kind of guy who likely not afraid of any man. This is the guy who appeared at the police and there was no rain until he appeared again three years later! Read of his victory at Mt. Carmel [i Kings 18:1] This same guy runs from a woman seeking to kill him. He runs like a scalded dog. He wishes for death but runs from a woman wanting to accommodate him! Elijah was down in the dumps.
2. The Causes of Discouragement.
A common experience. Affects all of us. Here are some proven causes of discouragement.
A. Physical exhaustion. The relationship between the state of the body and the attitude of the mind are close. Elijah went from victory to rejection.
B. Apparent Failure. He viewed his work and testimony as failing to bring the King and Queen to belief in Jehovah God.
C. Grievous Disappointment. Elijah felt like his work was all in vain.
D. Inactivity. He, Elijah, ran from duty. Became unemployed.
F. Spiritual Lonliness. Elijah’s steps were once ordered of The Lord. Now aware of deserting God. He is without divine guidance.
G. Diminished Faith. Elijah lost faith in others. He lost faith in God and in Himself.
Our God is an awesome, powerful glorious God. It is well that we remind ourselves from time to time.
3. The Cure for Discouragement.
It is of no value to us at all. We must triumph over it. We must control it or it will control us.
A. Sleep is a cure.
B. Healthy food is a cure.
C. Express your grief. Do not stay bottled up. Share with God and/or trusted Christian
D. Conviction of sin must be confessed and repentance sought after
E. Share the good news. Salvation in Jesus Christ
F. Do something productive. Return to work.
The encouragement of friends can be most helpful. However he who finds the rest in God’s glorious presence has found the unending source of comfort.
Until next time,
