Question: Are you happy?
No you’re not. You are not really happy. You don’t have joy in your life. Pretty brass of me to make such a statement. How can I say such a thing? Just who do I think I am? I’m right. I can prove I’m right. Right now you’re not happy because of what I have said.
My credentials? Nothing more than being a people watcher. I observe what I and people in general get happy about. Our team won. A bonus check was received. The new car. The cruise of a lifetime. More money. Beautiful bride or handsome groom. Change these to our team losing, company took money, old car broke down, the cruise ship wrecked, we lost money and the bride or groom revealed things not seen in the courtship…BOOM….Not Happy.
Conflict arises from a lack of contentment. Restlessness develops into dissatisfaction. Prolonged dissatisfaction ushers in a period of sadness. Do you want to be sad all the time? Not if you’re normal. So how do we find happiness?
First realize ‘happiness comes and goes but joy remains.’ So happiness is not what you’re really after. What you really want is Joy. That comes from the spiritual, not the physical.
You can have joy when you are unhappy about no bonus check because it isn’t the money you are trusting in. It’s God you trust. It should be.
The old car can still bring you joy because it still work’s. May not look good but it runs. How many times do you see nice cars broken down on the side of the road. More often than you might think. It isn’t the car you are trusting in. It’s God you trust. It should be.
That cruise you thought was going to make you didn’t. It made you unhappy because the ship wrecked. You could be bummed out or say what an opportunity. Theres CNN, Today Show, Local news, folks back home to tell the story to. Limited celebrity stays just came your way. It ain’t the lottery but theres that Dr. Phil guy! You finally come back to earth, place your feet on the ground and realize it isn’t the ship you are trusting in. It’s God you trust. It should be.
The Lottery. More money equals more taxes, more kin folk you never knew you had and more thieves to hide from. It isn’t the lottery you are trusting in. It’s God you trust. It should be.
Oh the beautiful bride or handsome groom. You rushed into marriage. Sleep with each other before marriage. Defiled holy sanctimony. Played the game of courtship trying to convince each other ‘what a find’ you are. The short courtship and selfish sexual encounters didn’t reveal as much background information one needs to enter into holy matrimony. It isn’t the sex, attractiveness or infatuation you are trusting in. It’s God you trust. It should be.
Therefore have real happiness by being consumed with joy that comes from:
1. Not being self-centered
2. Not being so busy you forget to pray
3. Not being so worldly minded you embrace the world and commit adultery with God.
What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: ” He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”? (James 4:1-5 NASB)
Here’s what you do.
1. Humble yourself
2. Submit to God
3. Resist the Devil
4. Draw near to God
5. Get rid of your sins
But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “G od is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you. (James 4:6-10 NASB)
Are you happy?
Until next time,
