I Own You! Well not really. But doesn’t this verse suggest ownership of your spouses body?
The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. (1 Corinthians 7:4 NASB)
Can you imagine me telling my wife, “Honey, you’re not going to cut your hair. I like it long and that’s the way it will stay.” You may tell some wives in some states that but not a South Carolina wife. Envision the following dialogue.
“A South Carolina Wife”
Three men married wives from different states.
The first man married a woman from Michigan. He told her that she was to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away.
The second man married a woman from Missouri He gave his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. The first day he didn’t see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done and there was a huge dinner on the table.
The third man married a girl from South Carolina. He ordered her to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn’t see anything, the second day he didn’t see anything, but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher.
Now, I can see me saying to my wife, “Honey, You hair looks nice when you _______ and even though I prefer it to be _______ I’ll love you either way.
I may not like my mustache but if my wife does then in my love for her I want to please her. So I will keep the mustache. It’s for her.
So, what do you think this verse means? following is the verse in it’s context.
Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman. But because of immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband. The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. But this I say by way of concession, not of command. Yet I wish that all men were even as I myself am. However, each man has his own gift from God, one in this manner, and another in that. (1 Corinthians 7:1-7 NASB)
Until next time,
