A Smart Start to A Fabulous Future
How would you feel to wake up one morning and see a van pull up in front of your house. A trio of people get out. Behind them are news crews with cameras and microphones. If you are like me your first thoughts are of the 60 Minutes News team. They have found me!
You however will notice them carrying balloons and a large cardboard sign. On the side of the van it doesn’t say News 7 On Your Side! It reads Publishing Clearinghouse Sweepstakes!! How do you feel now?
Finally good fortune has come your way!
People say they would be happy to have millions. John D. Rockefeller was once asked how much more money he would need to be truly happy. He said, “just one more dollar.”
There are those who say, “if I just had enough to pay all my debts with a little spending money left over I’d be happy.” I just want to live comfortably.
The Christian knows the teaching from God’s Word where we are told the love of money is the root of all evil. (1 Timothy 6:10) It’s not the money but the love of the money. So the tendency is to look at what so many Christians do not have and what the evil and the unbelievers appear to have.
Is it me or does it seem those who don’t go to church have money? They don’t seem to have troubles. If they do they don’t care! It is easy to get envious.
In light of this let’s consider the 37th Psalm
Psalm 37 is a wisdom psalm.
Fretting is not an option. [Psalm 37:1a]
Do not fret because of evildoers,
“fret not” = do not get heated
Envying is not an option. [Psalm 37:1b]
Be not envious toward wrongdoers.
Exodus 20 tells not to covet, but to envy is to ‘open the door to covetousness.’
A. There is Pleasure In Serving The Lord.
Take Delight. [Psalm 37:4]
Delight yourself in the LORD;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
You recall Paul and Silas in prison singing as well as praying. [Acts 16:22-30]
B. There is a Plan In Serving The Lord.
Commit Your Way. [Psalm 37:3b, 5]
Trust in the LORD and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Commit your way to the LORD,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
Entrusting your career to the Lord. Your family, finances, future. Jeremiah 29:11 is so very popular today. Let me give you the companion verse to Jeremiah 29:11. It is Psalm 138:8.
C. There is A Position In Serving The Lord. [Psalm 37:6]
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light
And your judgment as the noonday.
You will be vindicated. This is Liberation. Unshackled by the actions and seemingly good fortune of those who care nothing for God and righteous living.
The theological term is justification. Romans 8:28-39
28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 Just as it is written, ”FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG; WE WERE CONSIDERED AS SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED.”37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
D. There is A Purpose In Serving The Lord. [Psalm 37:3a]
Trust in the LORD and do good: Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Cor. 10:31
It is theological wisdom. God’s way is to overcome evil with good. “The anger of man does not work the righteousness of God.” Romans 12:21
A. LOOK AHEAD [Psalm 37:2, 10]
For they will wither quickly like the grass
And fade like the green herb.
Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more;
And you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there.
Rather than focusing our attention on the ungodly, wicked unbelievers we should oust them from our mind by focusing on the Lord Himself.
Here’s the deal, I took a look at the back of the book and found the righteous in Christ WINS!
B. LOOK UP. [Psalm 37:3-7]
Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.
Cease from anger and forsake wrath;
Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing.
For evildoers will be cut off, But those who wait for the LORD, they will inherit the land. (Psalm 37:7-9 NASB)
