I’m Not A Fan

Ever heard the statement, ‘the more things change the more things are the same.’ Some say there is nothing new. Ecclesiastes 1:9 That which has been is that which will be,
And that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun.

We used to call new things that come and go ‘a fad.’ Only time can tell if something is truly a fad. A fad is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period, generally as a result of the behavior’s being perceived as novel in some way.[1] A fad is said to “catch on” when the number of people adopting it begins to increase rapidly. The behavior will normally fade quickly once the perception of novelty is gone.[1]

My father used to talk on CB radios before they became a fad. Mood Rings were a short-lived fad. There are some current candidates of a fad that I’m not a fan of. For instance:

  1. Body piercings: Particularly nose rings. What good reason is there to have them? What is the meaning? Were not nose rings used in the bible to identify a slave? Any good purpose come from one? Seems people do these things to be different from others yet end up being the same as others.
  2. Baggy britches: WWJD? Men of the bible would ‘gird up their loins’ not expose them. Our society is bent on portraying the outrageous so let’s “come out of the closet” with the baggy britches and advertise being a ‘thug’ as though it is something great to attain. Showing your boxers is a fashion statement. However the statement usually isn’t a good one. You want to see my underwear? Well, I Don’t want to see yours!
  3. Babbling mouths: here’s the deal. Unless you can throw in some vulgarities, a few superlatives, frequent derogatory remarks about yo momma etc… then you aint communicating. You gotta talk ‘smack’ and use abbreviations [mf…er]. If my grandma hear me talk smack, I’d get smacked back!! Taking God’s name is a ‘filler’ for delinquents who have no vocabulary and lack the sufficient words to adequately express their thoughts. In other words they are stupid. It is not smart to take God’s name in vain. Exodus 20:7  “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. CURIOUS: DO YOU KISS YOUR MOM WITH THOSE LIPS?

There is a part of me that’s looking forward to the day these behaviours become fads and pass away. However, there is a part of me that is concerned with what will replace them?

Colossians 3:4  When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. 5  Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.6  For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience,7  and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them.8  But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.9  Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices,10  and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him–

James 3:8  But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.9  With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;10  from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.11  Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water?
